In 1987, a large photographic documentary project called Changing Chicago was launched by the Focus/Infinity Fund. With the support of five museums in Chicago, the fund commissioned thirty-three photographers to photograph life throughout the city’s diverse urban and suburban neighborhoods for a period of one year.
The project culminated in five simultaneous exhibitions at the supporting museums and the publication of a book by the University of Illinois Press.
As one of the photographers selected to participate in Changing Chicago, I elected to photograph the city’s southern suburbs, an area that is often overlooked but is, in many ways, representative of suburbs throughout the United States.
Nearly forty years later, in 2024, I had the opportunity to revisit and re-photograph some of these locations for an exhibition at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights, Illinois.
